Following the acquisition of a large period Italian Renaissance fireplace, architectural antiques specialist, Westland London based in London EC2 have been able to trace the piece by repute to Warwick Castle. Carved in Istrian marble, it’s a substantial and imposing example of the beauty, intricacy and classical features of Italian Venetian Renaissance design carving and architecture.
The frieze is carved in high relief with leafy scrolls interspersed with Putii on seahorses styled with front legs rearing either side of a central circular medallion. The medallion itself features Hercules striking down an opponent with dramatic effect. Winged figures on the corners bookend the frieze gloriously with detailed feather texturing and talons.
The jambs are equally intricate with typical descending Arabesque designs. Though it is Venetian in origin and dates back to the 17th-18th century, its more recent provenance is reputed to have been Warwick Castle. A partly medieval castle built in 1068 by William the Conqueror, Warwick Castle sits on the River Avon in Warwickshire containing some of the world’s finest antique furniture and architecture.
The chimneypiece was probably brought to England at some point during the long period of The Grand Tour when sons of The Gentry were encouraged to travel to the cultural centers of mostly Mediteranean Europe..before or after University in the equivalent of their Gap Year. Usually longer than one year, the Grand Tour started in the 17th century when the usual destinations were Venice, Florence and Rome…and on into the 19th century when Greece and even Egypt became the destination for the most adventurous once the grip of the Ottomans was loosening.
The marble itself originates from the Istrian peninsula, which borders Italy, Croatia and Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea. It is sometimes referred to as Istrian stone, which was used prolifically in Renaissance Veneto, Venice etc.
The antique Renaissance fireplace currently takes its place amongst a remarkable collection of other grand examples at the Westland London gallery at St. Michaels Church in Central London.

London is a multicultural metropolis, teeming with different tastes and global products – over 200 diverse cultures are represented in the city. If you are staying in a serviced apartment in London, exploring these cultural enclaves can be a fascinating experience. It’s especially worth sampling the diverse cuisines on offer, whether you want to cook in your apartment or enjoy the speciality restaurants across the city.

China Town is a very popular tourist destination and boasts over 70 restaurants, supermarkets and gift shops. Around Chinese New Year, the area is a hive of activity, but it’s a lively place to be throughout the year. The Shanghai Blues restaurant is one of China Town’s finest and serves an array of authentic Chinese cuisine as well as the British favourites. For those with a small budget and a large stomach, all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets can be found throughout the area, some for as little as £5. They might not offer the best quality food but are a great way to fill up for less when you’re on the go. However, if you prefer to cook for yourself, consider shopping at a Chinese supermarket to buy speciality ingredients and head back to your London serviced apartment, where you can make use of the kitchen facilities provided.

Brick Lane is famous for its numerous curry houses and claims to be the ‘curry capital of London.’ The area is known by locals as Banglatown and is the centre point of the city’s Bangladeshi community. The Aladin restaurant on Brick Lane is often rated as one of the best in London. The restaurant doesn’t sell alcohol, so be prepared to bring your own – and consider their special, the Haryali Chicken Masala. The area also hosts a vibrant art and fashion scene – it’s particularly famous for graffiti works by artists such as Banksy and Ben Eine, as well as playing host to many of the local art schools’ exhibitions. During the weekends, there’s a market that caters to the artsy nature of the area, with many stalls selling quirky goods such as vintage clothes and antiques. Brick Lane is in the East End, particularly convenient if your London serviced apartment is in the City.

The area known as ‘Little Istanbul’ extends from Dalston through Stoke Newington to Harringay, although strictly speaking, it’s home not just to the Turkish community but also to Greeks, Kurds and Cypriots. One of the best-known local restaurants is The Stone Cave. The restaurant’s interior has been designed to replicate the inside of a cave and serves traditional Middle Eastern cuisine such as flat breads, feta cheese, and koftas. The area has a peaceful atmosphere during the day, but some of the area – particularly Dalston – changes considerably in the evenings, when its trendy clubs open their doors. The numerous convenience stores mean that if you’re staying in a London serviced apartment, you can make an authentic Middle Eastern snack at any hour of the day.

If you are travelling to London on business, why not stay in serviced apartments? SilverDoor have many serviced apartments in London and are constantly adding to their portfolio.

When we think of events, festivals and theatre in Britain, we often think of London, the capital, but Britain has many other thriving cities worth visiting and one of these is Manchester. The city has events for everyone, from live music and sports, to art and theatre. Manchester is a large place, and its many events are spread throughout the city. So too are serviced apartments in Manchester, so they provide the perfect place to stay if you want to enjoy some of these events while in the city on business.

One of Manchester’s most popular attractions is Chill Factore. Chill Factore has more snow than you could imagine and there are many ways for you to enjoy it. Visitors can try skiing or snowboarding on the longest indoor slope in the UK or, alternatively, can just have fun tubing. Chill Factore is a great day out and after a long hard day on the slopes, serviced apartments in Manchester provide a great place to relax; many come with comfy sofas and flat screen televisions.

Walking always provides a great way to see a city, and Manchester is no exception. There is a lot of history packed into Manchester and guided walks can be a great way to find out more. Walks available include ghost walks, underground walks and canal walks. If you prefer to explore on your own, this can easily be done too. Many of the serviced apartments in Manchester are within easy walking distance of the city centre and its many sights, so provide the perfect starting point for your journey.

Manchester’s influence on UK culture is widespread and longstanding, from its music to its architecture and theatre. The city has brought to our ears the likes of The Stone Roses, The Happy Mondays and The Chemical Brothers and is known for its seminal influence on British music. Most of the venues of its musical heyday have fallen into disrepair, but the Manchester Arena provides a great venue for seeing live music as well as family shows and sporting events. There are also smaller venues dotted around the city.

The architecture of Manchester demonstrates a rich variety of styles including Victorian architecture, art deco and neoclassical; some of the most impressive buildings are Manchester Town Hall and Manchester Central Library. If you’re a bookworm, the Manchester Literature Festival draws some of the literary world’s leading lights, while for theatre, the centrally located Palace Theatre offers a great variety of shows. The Lowry Centre is a great place to see exhibitions, theatre and comedy.

Most of the serviced apartments in Manchester are near to public transport of some kind, with reliable bus and tram services across Greater Manchester. It’s also relatively cheap to get around by taxi. Manchester is a large city and it would be impossible to see everything if you are only there for a short time, so it’s a great idea to plan before you go. Work out what you want to see the most and make sure you see it.

If you’re staying in Manchester for an extended period of time, why not say in serviced apartments? Specialist agency SilverDoor can offer serviced apartments in Manchester and throughout the world.

MANY ANTIQUE CHIMNEYPIECES AND FIREPLACE MANTELS that pass through the galleries of Westland London, EC2 are of considerable vintage. Frequently originating from one, two, three even four hundred years previous to the original installation provenance which is frequently far distant from the location where it comes into Westland’s sphere. Also there have often been numerous relocations since the original installation. These distinguished elderly prestigious antique fireplace mantels and other features of the highest quality have been understandably treasured and carefully tended by all previous owners and merchants being such expensively made rare and central elements of the Houses and palaces of prominent citizens.

TRACING THE ANTIQUE HISTORIES OR PEDIGREES of these prized and precious Architectural antique elements and features is usually a blend of skilled diligent research …and chance. Being focussed on the subject with an extensive library on many aspects of historical architectural antiques ranging from Medieval Italian Palazzo’s to Victorian Arts and Crafts mansions, Westland, if time allows sometimes finds helpful references leading to discovery of the original provenance or subsequent installation locations.

AN EXAMPLE IS THE CASE OF WESTLAND’S STOCK ITEM 7927 : It was the chance discovery of an ancient copy of the since expired venerable antique Connoisseur Magazine from March 1960. Therein was a full page black and white advert for the self same antique Georgian fireplace mantel..and indicating that it had been recently removed from a house in Bath, Somerset by the long established antique fireplace dealers J. Pratt and Son. This is likely to have been the original 18th century location, so it can be assumed the Pedigree was complete. Manufacture in Italy or England by 18th century Italian craftsmen, transit over the waves to Bristol, installation in Bath, removal to Mount Street Mayfair by Pratt, installation in a Manor House in Oxfordshire by Pratts in the 1960’s. From thence to Westland London’s EC2 galleries…and then to Tokyo, Japan. In all probability it will at some distant point in the future resume its life journey to a different location having been treasured and protected by all concerned over 250 years.

THE TIMELESS ETHOS regarding such objects is best described by the Swiss Watchmaker Patek Phillippe who state in their long running publicity that these items are never truly owned by one individual rather that they are held in trust for following generations.

AIR-FER MER : Was the caption of the French antiques shipping industry in the 1930’s when many adverts in England as well proclaimed trouble free door to door shipping of high value fragile antique items to remote destinations…in those days usually from Europe to North and South America. So a present day aspect could be the air, sea rail or wagon miles an item has travelled in its lifetime to the present day. Right from the creaking mule or bullock drawn carts down to the quayside in Forti Di Marmi in Tuscany in the 17th-18th century, loaded onto the sailing ship for transport to England…right up to the glistening shiny, hi tech computer tracked FedEX Airfreight service in cargo 747’s of the present day.

About Westland London

In recent years we have seen a consistent increase in the cost of living alongside an increasingly constrained job market. Put together with the £9,000 per year tuition fees being charged by most universities, many people will be asking themselves whether they can really afford to spend three years in full time study and whether it is worth all that debt?

There is an affordable alternative which will allow students to maximise their earning potential without accumulating an average of £60,000 of debt by the time they graduate.

Increasing numbers of students are now choosing to study their degree Part Time, while holding a full time job. Classes would typically be held in either the evenings or weekends so will not impact on your working life, the learning will also be reinforced by a range of online study resources which will enable you to continue your studies where ever you are.

This not only allows you to continue to earn a living while studying but has a wide array of other benefits as well. Recent surveys of large employers indicate that employers value experience almost as highly as strong qualifications, so why not gain both at the same time? Most employers will be happy to give students time off for their exams and many will even contribute towards your tuition fees, as long as your studies are relevant to your job. After all, they are the ones who will benefit from your increasing knowledge.

For some students, part time means taking a degree course more slowly, studying up to 90 credits a year rather than the 120 credits a year taken by full time students. Full time students normally complete a degree within three years. Part time student can take up to six years. Study could take place in a classroom during the day (sharing classes with full time students) or online in the evenings or in the classroom at weekends.

For other students part time means taking 120 credits a year to complete a degree within three years but studying outside working hours at evenings and weekends, blending classroom and online learning.

By choosing to study part time in one of our campuses in central London, you will have the same access to all of our dedicated staff and facilities as any full time student and will also be a part of one of the most diverse and dynamic groups of students in the world. You will be studying alongside students from some of the world’s leading companies. Many alumni report that the contacts they make during their studies help forge the paths of their future careers.

If you would like to maximise your earning potential without running up debt, then perhaps a Part Time degree is your route to a brighter future.

For more information visit the Part Time Degrees in London page. This article was put together by the Schools and Colleges Liaison team at Kaplan Business School London who work with many institutions every year helping students with their university applications for courses as well as discuss issues such as university life and the career opportunities open to them upon graduation.

The first step in becoming a plumber is deciding whether a plumbing career is right for you. Plumbers are in demand with more home being built and previous plumbing materials used in commercial buildings and property needing replacing. There is always a shortage of plumbers and space in the market for those looking to enter into the trade.

There are two main ways to becoming a fully qualified plumber. If you are between the ages of 17 and 19 years you may want to begin by enrolling on an apprenticeship course through your local college or educational institution.

Apprenticeships generally consist of three to four years of on the job training as well of a select amount of time spent in the class room. Apprenticeships allow candidates to learn the basic skills needed for a career in the industry, such as identifying different grades of pipe and the best practice for using industry regulated tools.
An alternative to the apprenticeship scheme and favouring mature students is the PPC4 Plumbing Courses qualification. The first stage of the scheme will enable you to begin working as a professional plumber as soon as you feel confident enough to do so. The scheme also includes qualifications such as the water supply regulations and domestic installer certificates which are important to have if you wish to go into homes to carry out work.

Become fully qualified with plumbing courses

According to the plumbing authorities (BLS), job opportunities for plumbers will be good in the future especially for those with experience, so it is suggested that starting at a young age as an apprentice would be an ideal way to get into the trade. The plumbing qualifications do not restrict candidates to regular household tasks but also provide a basis for other occupations such as construction work, oil and gas safety as well as working on large commercial projects. In fact the professions of pipe layers, pipe fitters, plumbers and steamfitters combined are one of the largest and highest paid trade occupations in the UK with no shortage of work.

Overall, being a plumber can be a very rewarding career prospect and if you like the idea of being out of the office in a hands on job role, being your own boss or working for a construction company then plumbing sounds like something you should consider. Plumbing courses have little if any entry requirements and your eagerness to learn new skills within the industry is what will decide whether you will make it as a successful plumber.

There are many things that you can do to ensure that the electrician that comes into your home is fully qualified with the right electrician courses to do the job at hand. Too many people have come to me in the past to fix electrical problems in the home that have been made worse by unqualified electricians when the job should only be a quick fix.

Below I have outlined a few priority checks that can be made to ensure that you will obtain professional advice from a quality source.

Don’t take over the phone quotes as the main source of contact

Like with many services some black hat electricians may try and give you a price over the phone which may be far too high for the job required. They may also provide you with a price and then add “additional costs” once they have started the job leaving the consumer in situation where if they would like a job finished they have to pay the extra costs. To avoid this, ask around for a number of quotations and make sure that they assess the situation with their own eyes.

Ask for a reference

If you are looking to get a large job completed around the home then it is best practice to ask for a reference for other large jobs that the electrician has previously completed. Jobs such as a complete house re-wire would be an ideal time to ask for references. Although if you only need a small job doing, such as adding a couple of plug sockets you may not wish to ask for references.

Check for qualifications or electrician course certifications

It is best to check to see if the electrician is certified to carry out the proposed electrical work. Electrician PEC2 course qualifications provide an ideal way of identifying whether the technician has taken and passed the industry standard to become an electrician.

Alternatively the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), the main trade association for electricians in the UK can provide you with confirmation of an electrician’s identity. The NICEIC has over 20,000 approved contractors who have been screened to a high standard.

Don’t be bogged down in an emergency

If the scenario arises where you need to call out an electrician after regular working hours then it is best that you still ask around a few providers to ask for prospective quotes. Or if you know someone that can recommend a provider that they have previously used then give them a try. Don’t feel that as it is an emergency you have no choice but to agree to the first valuation.

Air Partner has opened a specialist cargo department at its Milan office in Italy as part of its strategic expansion plan to develop its worldwide freight charter services.

This comes a year after the aircraft broker’s launch of a dedicated freight department within its US operation and two years after the opening of Air Partner Freight in Turkey.

The Air Partner group now has specialist freight teams in nine of its 21 worldwide locations based at the company’s UK HQ and in France, Germany, Japan, Dubai, Hong Kong, Turkey, the US and now Italy.

“We are confident this was the right time to add a permanent local freight presence in Italy, despite the current economic uncertainty in Europe,” said Regional Freight Manager Mike Hill. “In addition to our well-established passenger charter services, our transient Italian freight business has been growing at a healthy rate for many years.

“Air Partner’s ability to provide local expert knowledge 24/7 is a key factor when clients choose to appoint us as their partner for bespoke aviation charter requirements. Additionally, the recent European launch of our Time Critical product and its tailormade real-time RedTrack door-to-door freight tracking system allows us to offer this new service to Italian clients, including those in the automotive and aerospace logistic sectors.”

The company’s newly-appointed Milan-based freight manager is aviation specialist Domenico Di Roberto. Throughout his career he has held senior sales and commercial director positions at Air Mauritius, Turkish airlines, TWA, Pescara Airport, Italy’s Baltour travel group, and Skylink Aviation.

“Air Partner has been trading for 50 years and over the last 14 the company has established an international reputation a ‘go now’ specialist able to meet every request, even those involving flights into remote areas and outsize loads,” he said. “The company continues to evolve and I am looking forward to the challenge of developing relationships within the diverse Italian freight sector.”

In the financial year to 31 July 2011, Air Partner Freight’s client numbers in the industrial and commercial sector increased by 19 per cent.
