“Flo” from Colebrook Bosson Saunders wins prestigious award
Colebrook Bosson Saunders is proud to announce that their latest product “Flo” is the recipient of a red dot award for product design. The red dot design award dates back to 1955 and is now the world’s largest and most distinguished design competition. It breaks down into the three disciplines ‘red dot award: product design’, ‘red dot award: communication design’ and ‘red dot award: design concept’. There were almost 14,000 entries from 68 countries in the year 2010 alone. This year, designers and companies from 60 countries entered 4,433 products in the red dot award: product design.
Flo is a self-powered dynamic monitor arm that allows a flat screen to be used in either an upright viewing position, at desktop level as a touch screen, or anywhere in between. Flo stands out from other monitor arms because it ensures an ergonomic workstation by addressing three major needs of end-users and specifiers: free flowing action with smooth adjustability; a unique visual indicator weight gauge; compatibility with touch-screen technology and in addition, as one would expect from a Colebrook Bosson Saunders’ product, purity of design. It is the second prestigious red dot award Colebrook Bosson Saunders has won; the first time was for the “Rodney” monitor arm in 2009.
Professor Dr. Peter Zec, the initiator of the red dot design award, comments: “As always, our jury cast a very careful eye over the products submitted. Design quality has asserted itself clearly in the judging process, with genuine and new creative solutions also being rewarded. Both of these criteria are not just yardsticks for good design, but also for the potential for success on the market. This potential is increased several times over by the targeted use of our renowned design award. ”
Flo will be exhibited in the red dot design museum together with the other prize-winning products, from 5 July to 1 August 2011 in the exhibition “Design on stage – winners red dot award: product design 2011” in the red dot design museum at the world heritage site of the Zeche Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen. With in excess of 1,500 products spread over an area of more than 4,000 m2, the red dot design museum houses the largest permanent exhibition of contemporary design worldwide.

With laptops now outselling traditional computers, it is more important than ever to ensure that you are using them in an ergonomically correct way.
In December 2008 the sales of laptops overtook those of desktop computers for the first time¹. This date provides a landmark that illustrates the massive shift in the way that we work today. So, it’s incredible to learn that the first commercially available portable computer – the Osborne – was not on sale until 1981. Although the Osborne was about the weight and size of a sewing machine it was nevertheless portable and marked the beginning of a revolution². However, it wasn’t until the 1990’s when technological advances enabled prices to be dramatically reduced that laptops started to become more common-place.
The dominance of laptop use over desk-tops and the prevalence of networking led to a huge uptake in the numbers of people who could now work out of the office. This varies from formalised arrangements where employees work from home a certain number of days a week through to the casual continuation of work through into the evening and weekends. Of course work isn’t the only activity that is performed on a laptop! Our leisure time – gaming, social networking – is increasingly spent behind a screen.
Do employers have a responsibility to ensure that their employees work in a healthy environment and in an ergonomically correct way at home in the same way as they carry responsibility for their health and wellbeing in the office? A supplement, published in 2004 to The Health and Safety Executive’s guidelines states that “where portable DSE (Display Screen Equipment) is habitually in use by a display screen user for part of his or her normal work should be regarded as covered by the Regulations”³.
So how can these guidelines be adhered to? Rather than hunching over a laptop the screen can be raised to the correct height (the top of the screen should be at eye-level) with the use of a laptop stand. Most stands are adjustable, with several height settings to make this possible. Laptop supports are an invaluable piece of kit for anyone using a laptop more than for just occasional use. A laptop stand should always be used with a secondary keyboard and mouse to avoid problems such as RSI (repetitive strain injury). The key is to find a comfortable working position; by raising the screen on a laptop stand the user has a better viewing angle which facilitates improved posture. This in turn leads to a reduced risk of back and neck aches.
As computer technology advances at an ever increasing rate it becomes more important than ever before to keep a check on the human consequences of changing ways of working. The current trend for smaller and lighter devices, while beneficial in so many ways also presents fresh challenges in terms of the health and safety of those who use them for sustained periods. In the twenty-tens the home has become a workplace too; and with that freedom come risks also.

On Thursday 2nd December Colebrook Bosson Saunders hosted the Private View of Painter Michael Corkrey’s exhibition at its London Bridge Showroom. Despite London seemingly grinding to a halt as the snow continued to fall for a third day running many fought through the elements to attend. The event was run in partnership with Little Britain (the construction industry sailing Regatta) whose past participants were invited to attend along with friends and clients of Colebrook Bosson Saunders. As part of Michael’s desire to introduce his paintings to new markets, beyond the confines of the regular art world, the exhibition provided a first opportunity to buy direct from the artist. Five percent of all painting sales are to be donated to the Little Britain charities, which include the Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust, Jubilee sailing Trust, The Cirdan Sailing Trust and Skandia British Sailing Team.
Martyn Colebrook of Colebrook Bosson Saunders explains “we’re very proud to be introducing the work of such a talented artist to a new audience. Michael is an incredibly gifted and dedicated artist and we’d just like even more people to know about his work. As a company we are known for our vision and creativity and our innovative approach to the design of ergonomic workplace accessories, so we are keen to support an artist like Michael who has a similar vision and drive to be the best within his field.”
Since leaving the Royal Academy Schools in 1989, Michael Corkrey has lived and worked in London. In his previous artistic incarnation, as a painter from life of nudes and portraits, Michael won the prestigious Hunting Art Prize and has painted portraits of sitters as diverse as Earl Spencer; the Spectator ‘low-life’ columnist Jeffrey Bernard; MPs and High Court Judges. Eschewing the more conventional and often generalised forms of seascape painting, Corkrey focuses instead on the specific, arrested moments of the sea at its most extreme. Instants normally lost in a split-second, but which are transformed into powerful and epic images of haunting beauty that transport the viewer into mysterious and rhapsodic visions of the sea.

Colebrook Bosson Saunders’ new monitor arm “Flo” wins Best of NeoCon Award
Even before its full European launch Flo was picking up awards across the Atlantic with a Silver Best of NeoCon Award in the Technology Support category. The award winners are selected from the best products on show at NeoCon in Chicago, where Flo was showcased in the Herman Miller showroom. NeoCon is North America’s largest exhibition of contract furnishing for the design and management of the built environment.
Flo is a self-powered dynamic monitor arm that allows a flat screen to be used in either an upright viewing position, at desktop level as a touch screen, or anywhere in between. Flo stands out from its competitors because it addresses three major needs of end-users and specifiers: free flowing action with smooth adjustability; a unique visual indicator weight gauge; the capability to support touch screens and in addition, as one would expect from a Colebrook Bosson Saunders’ product, purity of design.
Contract Magazine announced the winners of its 21st annual Best of NeoCon Competition, recognizing innovative new products introduced to the U.S. market during the year. 326 entrants were evaluated in all during the three days preceding NeoCon by a jury of 45 corporate, government and institutional facilities management executives, interior designers, and architects, who are responsible for selecting and buying furniture and furnishings for their specific organisations or clients. Eight jury teams visited Merchandise Mart showrooms and temporary exhibition stands to judge each product in person, based on the following criteria: functionality, flexibility, quality/durability, aesthetics/style, innovation, environmental sustainability, and pricing. Manufacturers or product designers had the opportunity to explain and discuss details of each entered product and to answer the jurors’ questions.
Colebrook Bosson Saunders are optimistic that this will be the first of many awards for Flo.
Flo can be trialed along with more innovations from Colebrook Bosson Saunders at ORGATEC in Hall 07.1, Stand C068.

Although not often stated so candidly, the design of the modern workplace has one overriding driver: the improved efficiency of those who work within it. This isn’t quite as mercenary as it first sounds, we now understand that for workers to be more “efficient” they must firstly be as happy and healthy as they can in their work. Proponents of workplace ergonomics, as well as management theory, understand this proposition well.
The principle behind an ergonomic workstation is that it should be designed with flexibility and adaptability at its core. No one size fits all and so every element of the office furniture provided needs to be able to adapt to suit each user, regardless of shape, size or usage. Ergonomic guidelines suggest that chairs should always be height adjustable and, if possible, desks adjustable too. All equipment should encourage or enable frequent changes of seating position and posture, even if these changes seem small they are beneficial. The top of a computer screen should be at the user’s eye level and about an outstretched arm’s length away.
A multi-billion pound industry has grown up over the last fifty or so years to design and supply ergonomic office furniture. ORGATEC – an exhibition showcasing the latest and best in the modern office – is a bi-annual trade show that attracts over 650 exhibitors from 39 countries and 60,000 visitors from 114 countries. Exhibitors are largely made up of office furniture suppliers but also include lighting, flooring, acoustics, A.V. and technology suppliers. ORGATEC’s target visitor is anyone who purchases or specifies furniture for the office, including architects, interior designers and facilities managers. Outside of these defined professions visitor groups are as endless as the companies and roles that exist within them, from executive management to administrators; from banks through to theatres.
Acknowledging the significance of workplace ergonomics, this year, the organisers of ORGATEC have announced: “Health and well-being boost productivity and creativity – ORGATEC 2010 will focus on ergonomics.¹” Continuing in their press statement to say “According to the results of a long-term study carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO), it is possible to boost productivity in the office by up to 36 percent. An important prerequisite for achieving this is the use of office furniture that has been ergonomically designed.”
And so, while intelligently designed ergonomic furniture might at first seem remote from the harsh reality of a tough economic climate, it is worth remembering that an ergonomic workstation can, by improving the wellbeing of staff, improve their performance and efficiency too. In this way, ergonomic office furniture could be perceived as an investment in an organisation’s workforce instead of an unnecessary cost. Remember this, work-related MSDs cost UK employers approximately £600 million and cost the UK economy as a whole £5.7 billion². With these types of figures involved, prevention has to be better than cure.

Leading designers and manufacturers of workplace accessories, Colebrook Bosson Saunders, are set to launch their latest monitor arm – Flo – at Orgatec (the biggest show of its kind for office design and facilities) to be held in Cologne from October 26th – 30th 2010. Flo is a self-powered dynamic monitor arm that allows a flat screen to be used in either an upright viewing position, at desktop level as a touch screen, or anywhere in between.
The intelligent design of Flo enables a screen to “float” above a desk and to be precisely positioned with an easy and natural sweeping motion in an ergonomically correct way to suit every user. Flo’s ease of movement is unparalleled with the minimum of effort required to create the smoothest and lightest action available, achieved by the use of a geometric spring system (GSS).
The constant objective throughout the design process was to keep the shape, surfaces and joints as simple and pure as they could possibly be. For example, the parallel motion mechanism is invisibly contained within the body of the arm permitting a visually pure shape. Through ingenious design, Flo has been engineered to offer maximum performance with the minimum number of parts. The exterior is of equally pure design with clean surfaces, few visible parts, and a minimalist, streamlined appearance.
Uniquely, Flo features a visual indicator weight gauge that aids quick and easy adjustment saving valuable time in large installations. Working in unison with the adjustable tension feature, it enables the user to set the optimum tension for the screen weight. Once the optimum setting is found for the first screen this can be replicated across all other workstations to cut installation time dramatically.
Flo is future-proof: with its unequalled range of movement Flo embraces and solves the challenges raised by the new age of computer screen technology (and enables a choice of secure landscape or portrait orientation). As touch-screens are becoming more commonplace, Flo is the first product of its kind to not only be able to support touch screens but also take into account how they can be used in a comfortable and therefore ergonomically correct way. Without compromising on aesthetics or functionality a very competitive price point has been achieved.
Sustainability and recycling were priorities: the arm can be disassembled for easy recycling and the component parts are made from the minimum variety of materials. As a “one-box” solution packaging can be dramatically reduced. Use of a spring mechanism instead of a gas-strut also aids recycling. Flo carries monitors from 3 to 9KG and moves easily with no need to lock into position.
Flo can be trialed along with more innovations from Colebrook Bosson Saunders in Hall 07.1, Stand C068.

In 1986 laptop computers had just 2% of the market share of computers purchased worldwide. By the second half of 2008 laptop or notebook PC shipments exceeded those of desktop computers¹. This astonishing leap to dominance within the computer market reflects the reduction in price and improvements in technology of laptop computers, but also changes in ways of working.
A growing phenomenon in the world of work is the shift towards home-working. About 8% of the workforce are now teleworkers (working from different locations, using the home as a base or working from home full-time). The HSE’s (Health and Safety Executive) 2006 Horizon Scanning paper reports that by 2015, 70-80% of workers could be, at least partially, working away from the office.² Home office workers are made up of several different groups: self-employed and freelance workers; employees who have the freedom to work from home some or all of the time and teleworkers whose motto is “work is something you do, not something you travel to”.³ The variety and breadth of homeworkers’ roles is as diverse as the workforce as a whole: from accountant to journalist and musician to software project manager. The one thing that unites pretty much all of them is their need to use technology on a daily basis.
Most home-workers find it necessary to be “mobile workers” too, whether driven by client and site meetings or just a desire for a change of scene. For this reason laptops rather than PC’s tend to be the technology tool of choice. Laptops were never really designed for prolonged use and can in some cases result in repetitive strain injury and musculoskeletal disorders.4 However, with the right accessories a laptop can be transformed into an ergonomically correct workstation. A home office laptop stand to adjust the height, (i.e. viewing position of the screen) and a secondary keyboard and mouse (so that hands have space to spread and find their natural position) can adapt a laptop to seriously reduce these health risks.
When planning your home office design some important considerations should include a desk with sufficient depth to place your laptop on a stand so that the screen is positioned an arm’s length away. If the screen on your laptop is small you might want to consider plugging into a secondary screen with the top of the monitor positioned at your eye level. An adjustable chair to ensure you are sitting at the correct height and distance from your desk is also a must. Lighting is another key factor in your home office design. Consider carefully the location of your laptop or computer to avoid screen glare. Use a task light to provide extra lighting for reading to avoid unnecessary eye strain.
Above all your home office needs to be comfortable and conducive to work. As long as you get the technology, lighting and furniture right to ensure that your home is a healthy workplace you can let your imagination run riot and surround yourself with things that make you happy!

Colebrook Bosson Saunders is again to participate in the leading Australian annual trade event for the design community. The Chapter House in Flinders Lane, Melbourne, (a collaborative space shared by seven designer product companies) will be transformed into the fairytale world of Jack and the Beanstalk. Visitors will be confronted with the larger than life beanstalk, green foliage and creative characters from the story. On Saturday all the characters (including Jack) will come out to play. Follow the beanstalk down Flinders Lane until you reach the Chapter House where designer products will be unravelled as visitors climb up the beanstalk of the Chapter House, until finally arriving in the giant’s world!
Colebrook Bosson Saunders will be showcasing their video-conferencing solution: AVALL Double, to include live hook-ups with both the UK and US offices as well as a number of sites around Australia. Other products on show will be award winning flat screen monitor arms – Wishbone, Zorro and Rodney – as well as laptop stands and CPU holders. Seen for the first time in Australia will be “Flo”; it’s a future-proofed dynamic monitor arm set to take the design world by storm. Flo works to transform a flat screen into an ergonomically correct piece of kit in the viewing position, but – uniquely – it can also be adjusted to support touch-screens, the next generation, in each user’s favoured position.
Saturday in Design began in Sydney in 2003 and now alternates each year between Sydney and Melbourne. On the 6th (for private previews) and 7th of August (open house) Australia’s premier designer furniture, finishes, fixtures and lighting showrooms will be opening their doors to allow architects, designers, students and design-savvy members of the public to enjoy the products they specify in a showroom environment. Colebrook Bosson Saunders have been involved in the event since its inception; always finding exciting and innovative ways to introduce their new products to an increasingly design conscience audience.

In a unique event at the British Embassy, on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, Colebrook Bosson Saunders showcased their products on June 3rd 2010. Utilising the splendid Embassy terrace in front of the Ambassador’s garden, Colebrook Bosson Saunders exhibited their latest ergonomic workstation products and IT accessories for invited guests.
Colebrook Bosson Saunders has been doing business from their Paris base for five years now; winning some major projects for flat screen arms, CPU holders and other ergonomic accessories during this period, with clients including BNP, PARIBAS and AXA.
Martyn Colebrook, Colebrook Bosson Saunders’ MD, explains “We took the opportunity to exhibit our products and entertain our guests in this magnificent building to say thank you to many of our existing clients and also to introduce ourselves to some new ones. It proved to be the perfect setting for a very successful day.”
Germinal Sene, who heads up Colebrook Bosson Saunders’ Paris office, commented: “It felt like the first real day of the summer in Paris as the sun was shining and the temperature hit around thirty degrees. Our guests enjoyed a delicious buffet with red wine and champagne and a guitarist strummed the blues to complete the relaxed atmosphere.”
The British Embassy in Paris was built in 1713, but was remodelled in 1855 in keeping with the taste and style of the time. The ground and first floors were gilded and decorated by some of the most famous artists of the day. From 1990–94 the building was extensively renovated and modernised. The new garden was officially inaugurated by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in June 1992.
“We loved the apparent juxtaposition of this traditional and elegant venue, steeped in tradition, with our contemporary products whose biggest drivers are ever evolving technology and up-to-the-minute working practises,” summarised Martyn Colebrook.
