When it comes to post-18 education in Milton Keynes, most people will probably think of the world famous Open University that made its first home there in 1969. Like the new city, the OU enjoyed success and went on to become a major player in the higher education market. However, on a more local level, young (and older) people who live in Milton Keynes are just as likely to use Milton Keynes College to improve their education as not everyone needs or wishes to obtain a graduate level qualification.
In fact, the college serves a much wider area than Milton Keynes, with students from Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire in attendance. Good transport links and geographically split campuses make a wider area intake possible, with most students being able to study without having to pack their bags and leave the parental home!
Location and History
First established in 1982, Milton Keynes College is currently spread across three campuses in the city: Bletchley, Chaffron Way and Kiln Farm. The Bletchley campus received a major rebuilding and refurbishment recently and is sited opposite Bletchley railway station in the corner of the renowned wartime code-breaking base of Bletchley Park. Chaffron Way campus is more centrally located in the city and Kiln Farm campus is near to Wolverton in the northern part.
In addition to providing further education, the college moved more into providing higher education when it set up University Centre Milton Keynes (UCMK) as recently as 2008, based in Central Milton Keynes on Silbury Boulevard. Milton Keynes Library is located in the heart of the centre opposite the Marks & Spencer end of thecentre:mk. Its prime location makes it the number one library in the town. There are many smaller libraries found dotted around the housing estates and some of the larger schools boast impressive libraries that are often used by local students.
Milton Keynes Library
The most popular and by far the most extensive library is the Milton Keynes Library and the building spans two floors. As well as books, there are many computers that can be used by the public for free for 30 minutes at a time and they boast an internet connection as well as printing services. There is a huge mural that was painted onto the inner wall of the library when it first opened and this picture is one of the most recognisable pieces of art on display in the town. Milton Keynes Library is famed for its huge roof and large, open rooms with huge windows that go from floor to roof that give it lots of light. The library hosts many art exhibitions throughout the year, from artwork produced by local schools and colleges through to charity and fundraising artwork.
The main MK Library offers story time sessions for children of all ages and the library is open every day, apart from Sunday. Thursday and Friday see the library open from 09:00 through to 20:00, Saturday, it closes at 17:00 and Monday through to Wednesday it closes at 18:00. Under fives can enjoy the sing-a-long sessions on offer and there are even baby sessions available for children under the age of two. Bletchley Library
One of the other more popular libraries in Milton Keynes is the one located in Bletchley to the south of the town centre and parking here is free! A universal complaint from teenagers is that there’s nothing to do where they live but the Xscape building in central Milton Keynes puts an end to that lament for local youngsters. Opened in 2000 and now part of a chain of three centres (Wakefield and Glasgow being the other two). Xscape Milton Keynes has provided this new and still-growing town a prominent landmark, positioned on the highest hill for a few miles around.
Its aggressively post-industrial front elevation is visually striking, the 14 floors contained in an immense elliptical steel-clad facade. The approach is attractively landscaped, like much of the rest of this city, and there are plenty of parking areas around. From a distance, the building resembles a snow-covered hill, and in its early days one elderly lady was heard to remark “the skiers would surely fall off it!”
Indoor Skiing in Xscape Milton Keynes
Indeed they would, but she need not have worried as all the winter sports at Xscape MK take place safely on the inside, where there is a snow-covered slope (the SNO!zone) catering for both skiers and snowboarders who want to sharpen their skills and test out their gear before heading off to the challenge of the mountains. The main slope is an impressive 170m in length and covered in 1500 tonnes of snow, while a separate area is available for beginners to learn in safety. The hospital may only be a short trip away but it’s better to choose the right slope for your skill level instead!
Sliding down these slopes on skis, snowboards and toboggans aren’t the only mountain activities in this busy leisure centre as there is also a Climbzone for those who fancy themselves as the future Chris Bonnington. Two towers with a colourful covering of intriguing toeholds and handholds offer a variety of challenging routes that test the novice and expert alike. All the climbing is closely monitored by qualified staff who ensure your safety comes first while at the same time encourage you to attempt various routes that seem impossible at first.
Other Activities in Xscape MK
By now, you might notice your fitness needs improving, in which case you can work out in the Virgin Active gym to tighten those tired, flabby muscles. In addition to the usual gym kit, there is a 20m pool plus a kid’s pool, steam room, sauna and spa pool, not to mention the tanning machine. Still got some energy to burn off after all this activity? Then why not have a go at the ten-pin bowling lanes in the Xscape Centre? If you are not sure how to bowl successfully, the staff will happily give you some coaching time as well as serving refreshments.
OK, if you’ve still miraculously managed to retain some carbs, then show that elderly lady she was right about falling off Xscape by skydiving in Airkix at Xscape. Well, it’s actually indoors in a wind tunnel, but the experience is much the same as jumping from a plane or high building, complete with rotations and fancy moves to impress your friends (or not!). The only problem with burning carbs is they eventually need replacing but Xscape has just the answer in the form of 17 different food and drink outlets ranging from Costa Coffee through to Frankie & Benny’s. And then there are the shops where you can spend what little cash you might have left, with an emphasis on activity clothing like O’Neill or Ellis Brigham.
Now it’s time to have a go at being a radio presenter by visiting the Heart Experience studios and recording your own programme onto a CD. After which, it’s movie time at Cineworld with its 10 screens showing a variety of films catering for all tastes and ages. For older youngsters, all that sitting around at the end can be finished off by clubbing the night away at the in-house Oceana, venue which houses two nightclubs, four bars and one restaurant! And if you are still bored, then there is officially no hope for you!

The building is kept at a cool -2°C and around 250 skiers and snowboarders can be accommodated at any one time on the slopes. The viewing bar and gallery area is perfect for chilling out and watching all the action and many of the shops within the Xscape Milton Keynes cater to snow sports with specialised clothing stores on offer.
