03 Feb 12 Multicultural London

London is a multicultural metropolis, teeming with different tastes and global products – over 200 diverse cultures are represented in the city. If you are staying in a serviced apartment in London, exploring these cultural enclaves can be a fascinating experience. It’s especially worth sampling the diverse cuisines on offer, whether you want to cook in your apartment or enjoy the speciality restaurants across the city.

China Town is a very popular tourist destination and boasts over 70 restaurants, supermarkets and gift shops. Around Chinese New Year, the area is a hive of activity, but it’s a lively place to be throughout the year. The Shanghai Blues restaurant is one of China Town’s finest and serves an array of authentic Chinese cuisine as well as the British favourites. For those with a small budget and a large stomach, all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets can be found throughout the area, some for as little as £5. They might not offer the best quality food but are a great way to fill up for less when you’re on the go. However, if you prefer to cook for yourself, consider shopping at a Chinese supermarket to buy speciality ingredients and head back to your London serviced apartment, where you can make use of the kitchen facilities provided.

Brick Lane is famous for its numerous curry houses and claims to be the ‘curry capital of London.’ The area is known by locals as Banglatown and is the centre point of the city’s Bangladeshi community. The Aladin restaurant on Brick Lane is often rated as one of the best in London. The restaurant doesn’t sell alcohol, so be prepared to bring your own – and consider their special, the Haryali Chicken Masala. The area also hosts a vibrant art and fashion scene – it’s particularly famous for graffiti works by artists such as Banksy and Ben Eine, as well as playing host to many of the local art schools’ exhibitions. During the weekends, there’s a market that caters to the artsy nature of the area, with many stalls selling quirky goods such as vintage clothes and antiques. Brick Lane is in the East End, particularly convenient if your London serviced apartment is in the City.

The area known as ‘Little Istanbul’ extends from Dalston through Stoke Newington to Harringay, although strictly speaking, it’s home not just to the Turkish community but also to Greeks, Kurds and Cypriots. One of the best-known local restaurants is The Stone Cave. The restaurant’s interior has been designed to replicate the inside of a cave and serves traditional Middle Eastern cuisine such as flat breads, feta cheese, and koftas. The area has a peaceful atmosphere during the day, but some of the area – particularly Dalston – changes considerably in the evenings, when its trendy clubs open their doors. The numerous  convenience stores mean that if you’re staying in a London serviced apartment, you can make an authentic Middle Eastern snack at any hour of the day.

21 Dec 11 The Best Of Christmas From Serviced Apartments Berlin

Stollen at the ready, Glühwein warming on the stove – Christmas is an important tradition in Germany, and while staying in the city on business it’s worth getting involved in these events if you want to make the most out of your stay.

Germany’s capital Berlin evolves into a winter wonderland at this time of year, as copious numbers of Christmas markets spring up, each unique and offering something for everyone. The city’s largest Christmas market takes place in the historic backdrop of Spandau Old Town. There are over 400 booths present at the weekend and offer a wide range of Christmas goods. There’s also a craftsmen tent where visitors can watch wood carvers, goldsmiths and toymakers at work.

The Charlottenburg Castle Christmas Market is renowned as one of the most unique in the world. During the month of advent the castle and its grounds are converted into a Christmas market with over 150 booths and the inside of the castle hosts a variety of Christmas exhibitions. The romantic atmosphere is enhanced by the multi-coloured lighting that illuminates the area. Many of the serviced apartments Berlin has to offer are near this centrally located market.

These markets not only offer Christmas merchandise but many types of festive food as well. Stollen is a traditional food that you can expect to find at any festive market. It’s a cake-type loaf, which is heavy with dried fruit and contains a marzipan centre. Another popular German Christmas tradition is Lebkuchen – which is a spicy form of gingerbread that takes the form of festive shapes. Lebkuchen is baked at home and used to decorate the tree. It is eaten throughout the advent period. Many of the serviced apartments Berlin has to offer feature at minimum a kitchenette, and give you the opportunity to get creative with your own Christmas recipes.

The advent period starts on the 1st of December and lasts until Christmas Day; during this period the aroma of roasted almonds, hot chocolate and mulled wine is likely to fill the air. The German tradition of advent was started by Lutherans who would count down the first 24 days of December physically, by lighting a new candle every day, or making a chalk tally on their front door. Therefore it’s no surprise that the first advent calendar as we know it today originated from Hamburg in 1902. The calendar had 24 coloured pictures affixed to a piece of cardboard. Of course, when you’re staying in one of the serviced apartments Berlin has to offer, the owners might prefer it if you use a cardboard advent calendar, as opposed to a tally on the front door!

December is Berlin’s rainiest month, and it is estimated that one in three days will be wet. It’s lucky that many of the Christmas markets are prepared for this weather and offer some kind of covering. When it’s particularly cold outside, the spaciousness and warmth of your Berlin serviced apartment makes it the perfect place to relax and watch a Christmas DVD.

If you’re unfortunate enough to be working away from home over Christmas, why not stay in serviced apartments? Specialist agency SilverDoor can provide serviced apartments Berlin as well as properties throughout the world.

11 Nov 11 The Best Of Christmas From Serviced Apartments London

When you are moving at a snail’s pace along Oxford Street this Christmas and just about ready to launch your bratwurst and mulled wine at the nearest jostling passer-by, try to remember there are other things going on in London that aren’t just about shopping. Whilst staying in the serviced apartments London has to offer, it’s worth exploring some of the other Christmas events going on around the City.

This year’s Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park will feature a new ice rink surrounding the recently refurbished Victorian bandstand, which will be the largest outdoor rink of its kind in the UK. Whether you can spin and jump like the next Torvill or Dean, or happily wobble along the wall, this is likely to bring out the Christmas spirit in even the most devoted Scrooge– the band playing, the swooping hisses of the crowd’s blades cutting into the ice, and the crisp evening air. While snow cannot be guaranteed, the ice rink has something else to recommend it; It is also a great place to do some celebrity spotting – previous visitors include Prince Harry, Kate Moss, Tom Cruise and Liam Gallagher – but try not to stare so hard that you fall flat onto the ice below. Trust us, ice is just as hard as it looks and it’s not worth it!

Then there’s the food – it wouldn’t be Christmas without it. This year’s Winter Wonderland promises to offer an even wider variety of bars, restaurants and cafes than previous events, including the new Carousel Bar which rotates gently as you sip your mulled wine. The Bavarian Village includes bars with live music and, of course, the essential bratwurst stalls, and is the perfect place for an after-work festive drink. If you are staying in one of the serviced apartments London has to offer you may also consider cooking for yourself instead of eating out: many of the serviced apartments London has to offer have a kitchen or a kitchenette and a broadband connection, so it’s possible to find Christmas recipes online, and  whip up a suitably festive meal in your very own London serviced apartment.

If the cold outdoors is a bit much for you, and you don’t fancy watching the television in one of the serviced apartments London has to offer, why not consider seeing a traditional Christmas play? This year the Sell a Door Theatre Company is performing the show at the Greenwich Playhouse, a small theatre with a tradition of revitalising classic plays. The show promises to offer slightly more than the average Scrooge fest – Sell a Door is a reputable company which doesn’t shirk away from challenging material. But there should still be plenty to please a younger audience as well, asthe theatre promises “Christmas carols, ghouls and a generous helping of Christmas cheer”.

These are just a couple of ideas on how you can experience London’s Christmas fun whilst away on business. The serviced apartments London has to offer are all within easy travelling distance of these attractions.

20 Oct 11 Foodie Delights From Serviced apartments Glasgow

It’s unfortunate that many people associate Scottish cuisine with haggis and the ‘traditional’ deep-fried Mars Bar. While the Scottish do enjoy both of the aforementioned culinary delights, Scotland’s foodie scene has a lot more to offer.

The BBC Good Food Show will be on at Glasgow’s SECC from the 21st – 23rd of October. It will feature special events such as the MasterChef Restaurant and the Winter Kitchen and will include many top chefs such as Antony Worrall Thompson, James Martin and the rather appropriately named Tom Kitchin. There will also be the opportunity to meet local producers who will be exhibiting their knowledge, passion and goods. An adult day ticket to the show costs £16.50, and under-16s go free. Many of the serviced apartments Glasgow has to offer are near the SECC, which is home to many of the most important conferences and exhibitions held in the city.

Glasgow is a foodie hot-spot in Scotland and the city centre hosts restaurants of every kind, from traditional Scottish cuisine to sizzling curries. In fact, the choice is so overwhelming that this news article aims to help visitors shed some light on their culinary options while travelling or staying in the serviced apartments Glasgow has to offer.

One of the best restaurants in Glasgow is Grill on the Corner – it would be a terrible mis-steak not to visit. Grill on the Corner was the first restaurant in Scotland to serve the legendary Japanese Kobe steak (which costs £50). Other dishes on the menu combine traditional or well-known dishes with unique, creative touches. Most of the food is freshly prepared on-site, and the home-cut chips are something else!

For a traditional Scottish culinary experience, The Sisters restaurant is a must. It’s a relatively small restaurant, run by, as you may have guessed, two sisters who charge small prices. The typical menu options include delights such as roast limerick ham, Gressingham duck breast, or west coast haddock with Islay scallops. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere where guests can take their time to enjoy their meal.

If neither of these options is hot enough for you, it is worth considering the Shish Mahal curry house, which was recommended by the Guardian’s travel section. The owner Ali Ahmed Aslam has a strong claim to being the original inventor of today’s much loved Tikka Masala.

However, if you feel like spending a night at home in  one of the serviced apartments Glasgow has to offer, there are plenty of delicatessens – and Indian groceries – in the city centre, so you can shop for ingredients yourself and cook them in the kitchen or kitchenette. Furthermore, many of the serviced apartments Glasgow has to offer include an internet connection of some kind which allows you to find recipes online.

These are a few ideas of how to experience the real food culture of Glasgow while away on business, and the serviced apartments Glasgow has to offer are all within easy travelling distance of the restaurants mentioned.

When it comes to cuisine, staying in serviced apartments Glasgow means that you are spoiled for choice! Specialist serviced apartments agency SilverDoor can provide you with properties throughout Scotland and the rest of the world.

07 Oct 11 Serviced Apartments London for the London Film Festival

George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, David Cronenberg, Jude law and Rachel Weisz are just a few of the celebrities who will be gracing the red carpet at the eagerly anticipated 55th BFI London Film Festival. Between the 12th and the 27th October, the UK’s largest public film event will screen more than 300 features, documentaries, shorts and films from almost 50 countries. The festival showcases the best of world cinema and aims to champion creativity, originality, vision and imagination from both respected directors and industry newcomers. It is now seen as one of the world’s major film festivals, attracting thousands of people from across the globe.

Serviced apartments London frequently provide accommodation for staff working on films in and around London. West London is the centre of the UK’s film industry and is often in high demand among film production crews: film production sites there include Ealing Studios – where parts of the Oscar winning film, The King’s Speech, were filmed – and Pinewood, Shepperton and Teddington studios. There are many serviced apartments London that are within a short distance of all of these studios. There are also serviced apartments London next to Hampton Court Palace – where the film Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, was filmed.

Last year London’s local authorities recorded 13,494 filming days. Many things can go wrong when filming in busy cities, which often results in irregular working hours. If you are starting the day at 5am and finishing at 12am, staying in serviced apartments London is the ideal choice, as  having your own kitchen to cook in can be very convenient.

The London Film Festival doesn’t just bring film industry professionals to the city.  Large scale events such as this take months to prepare and involve hundreds of people, working at locations across the capital. Serviced apartments London are all within easy walking distance of public transport links – again making them an ideal place to stay.

The film industry makes a significant contribution to London’s economy. A recent article on London.gov.uk stated that in the last six months, features shot in and around London have generated more than £575 million for the capital. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, recently reaffirmed his commitment to the film sector, stating: “I am delighted to support the BFI London Film festival 2011… London has a strong reputation as a centre for creativity and innovation in the film industry.” With increasing competition from other cities and regions it is important for London to maintain its position as a centre for creativity. In 2010, the UK film production spend hit a record level of £1.1bn and approximately 75% of this production is concentrated in London and the South East, making a major contribution to the economy.

As well as the London Film Festival there are hundreds of other events in London which bring thousands of people to the city and the wide range of serviced apartments London has to offer provides accommodation suitable for everyone.

Flexibility is a must for anyone working in the film industry, making serviced apartments an ideal choice. Specialist agency SilverDoor can provide serviced apartments London, as well as properties worldwide.

20 Sep 11 Art, Culture and Comedy in Manchester Serviced Apartments

Manchester is well known for its arts and culture and October is certainly set to be a busy month for the thriving city. October will bring about two very popular annual festivals: the Manchester Literature Festival and the Manchester Comedy Festival.

Manchester’s literature festival begins on the 10th October continuing to the 23rd October and builds on the legacy of its successful predecessor, the Manchester Poetry Festival. The event brings in authors from across the globe and allows them to share their inspirational stories and discuss their work. This year’s authors include Tahmima Anam, Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze, Sarah Dunant and Zhu Wen. The festival takes place in a variety of venues over Manchester. The city is very large and can be bewildering, making the serviced apartments Manchester has to offer an ideal place to stay as they are located in many of the venue locations such as Deansgate, The Quays and Salford.

As well as the literature festival, the Manchester Comedy Festival takes place during the last two weeks of October, beginning on the 17th October. The festival came under threat this year after its funding was axed by Manchester City Council. However, comedians John Bishop and Sarah Millican came to the rescue by  putting on fundraiser performances. With this help this year’s festival will now include over 200 shows in around 30 venues across Greater Manchester. If you are going to see a show, many of the serviced apartments Manchester has to offer are all within easy walking distance of the venues, including the O2 Apollo theatre. Unlike the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Manchester Comedy Festival concentrates mainly on stand-up comedy; this year’s comedians include Rob Brydon, Peter Kay, Stephen Merchant and Andy Parsons.

If you are going to Manchester for either of the festivals and are travelling quite a distance, one of the best ways to get to Manchester is by train. There are trains from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly which take just over two hours and  tickets cost about  £50 for an adult return. Piccadilly station is in the centre of the city: many of the serviced apartments in Manchester are close to the station so you needn’t worry about a long trek once you’ve arrived in the city.

As well as performances taking place in the centre of Manchester there are also shows taking place in and around Greater Manchester. For example, there are performances taking place in MediaCity in Salford, including a reading by author Tom Palmer from his new children’s rugby novel, Scrum! The event will also feature a rugby-themed quiz and drop kick contest. Many of the serviced apartments Manchester has to offer are located in Salford Quays, providing easy access to MediaCity.

As well as introducing existing authors the festivals provide opportunities for new talents to shine. The literature festival has a creative writing competition, run by Manchester Metropolitan University. It attracts Greater Manchester school children aged 9 to 16 and those who win receive a cash prize. Both festivals have been a great success in the past and are set to continue for many years to come.

If you are planning on attending one of Manchester’s festivals, why not stay in serviced apartments? Specialist agency SilverDoor can provide serviced apartments Manchester, as well as other properties worldwide.
